AFORETIME //
Loyalty and Rainfern had rarely mixed. She'd bounced between mischief to outright defying her leaders since the day she was named a -paw, so it was no surprise when MoorClan greeted her with open distrust at the news of her pregnancy. Her refusal to reveal the father of her unborn kits only served to further put her onto shaky ground; Unmated, and without an obvious suitor, it was a popular rumor that the father was a rogue, or some exciting forbidden romance from across the border.
Rainfern cared little about what cats thought of her and her refusal to out a tom she'd used for a fling. To her, her kittens were no cat's concern but her own.
-
CHILDHOOD //
Shadowkit had a turbulent kithood, to say the very least. Rainfern's labor was a difficult one, thirty minutes of pain for two frail kits... and a third that had died before it had even taken its first steps. Needlekit and Shadowkit were the names of her two surviving children; sickly and fragile since birth.
Shadow and his sister had never been very healthy kits. Stunted in growth and often sick, the kits didn't often get the chance to play with the other cats their age. Kithood was long and boring and full of near constant trips to the medicine den. Shadowkit would have done anything to escape the smell of herbs, to be able to play with his sister without either of them doubling over from a coughing fit.
In a way, Shadowkit did get what he wanted, but not in the way he'd wanted it.
Leaf-fall came fast, and with it so did greencough. It was just a cough. The medicine cat had said it wasn't too serious, to take these herbs and everyone would be fine. It was supposed to be just a cough. By the end of the moon his sister and mother were dead.

APPRENTICESHIP //
He was numb, the dark-pelted tom couldn't feel an ounce of excitement even as he was named Honeyleap's apprentice. He was stunted, sad, and had no cat on this earth to love him. What was the point? All of the other apprentices hated him anyway, teased him relentlessly for his size and tainted origins. No one wanted him here, he didn't belong.
Honeyleap promised to prove him wrong. It didn't matter what, or who his father was, or that he wasn't as healthy or as big as the other apprentices, not to her, and not to his clan leaders. It mattered that he was a loyal and capable apprentice of MoorClan, and Honeyleap was determined to show him this to be the truth.
Being mentored under such a kind and understanding cat was perhaps the best thing that could have ever happened to Shadowpaw. Honeyleap was something he'd desperately needed, she loved him and he loved her. The apprentice flourished under Honeyleap's gentle guidance, growing into a capable young fighter at her paws. Shadowpaw found himself growing quiet close to his mentor, he adored her as a mother figure and practically considered the molly to be his blood.

WARRIORSHIP //
His warrior ceremony was one of the highlight's of Shadowpaw's life; the young apprentice given the suffix -strike for his bravery and skill in battle. He couldn't have been happier to make Honey mom proud. Shadowstrike blended into warrior life seamlessly, and though he was still bullied and outcasted thanks to the gossip, he didn't have much of a reason to care what they said.
It was a few moons into his warriorship when Honey's mate died, and Shadowstrike was there near instantly to comfort the cat he considered his mom. He knew exactly what she was going through, what it felt like to be alone, and so he was there. He was her shoulder to cry on, he helped when the night's were lonely, and he helped when she'd given birth to her kits and had no father to help raise them. He kitsitted and played and taught them all the proper things kits should learn from their fathers. He was as much as their big brother as Honeyleap was his mother, and he adored watching his adoptive siblings grow.
Shadowstrike was pretty ecstatic when Honeyleap was named leader too, being among the first to shout her name in the crowd. Shadow's awful proud of his mom, and for once he's looking forward to where the future will take him.
